Private Pilot License - Aeroplane

The first step in training to becoming a pilot starts with the Private Pilot License (PPL). With a PPL you are able to fly when you want to fly. Training at TylAir Aviation is easy — talk to one of our instructors today.



Act as Pilot-in-Command or co-pilot of an aeroplane

  • daytime only unless night endorsed

Act as Pilot-in-Command of an ultra-light aeroplane


Flight Training:

45 hours of flight time, including a minimum of:

  • 17 hours of dual instruction, including 3 hours of cross-country time and 5 hours of instrument time; 3 hours of which may be completed on an approved simulator

  • 12 hours solo practice, with 5 hours of cross-country flight including a flight of not less than 150nm with 2 enroute stops


Medical Fitness:

An applicant shall hold a valid category 3 or 1 medical certificate.


Ground School Training:

A PPL applicant must attend a minimum of 40 hours of approved ground school. This course consists of a series of lectures aimed at fully preparing the student for not only the required Transport Canada examinations, but also a safe and satisfying time in the world of aviation. The subjects dealt with in the ground school include Air Law, Aeronautics, Navigation, meteorology etc. Individual instruction will be given as required. A home study course is available with individual tutoring.


Written Examination:

A Transport Canada written exam is required

  • You must obtain a minimum of 60% in each of the following mandatory areas:

    • Air Law

    • Navigation

    • Meteorology

    • General Knowledge


Flight Test:

Successfully complete a Private Pilot flight test to Transport Canada standards.


Course Enrollment:

Students may enroll at anytime and commence flight training at their convenience; however, ground school timetables will be established and published for varied times.


Enrollment Requirements:


No minimum age to take lessons. Students must be at least 14 years of age to solo. A private pilot must be at least 17 years of age to hold the licence.


An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, or a person admitted to Canada with a valid Visa.


An applicant must be able to read exam questions and write the answers in either English or French, without assistance.


Minimum flying hours to meet Transport Canada requirements:

17 hours dual flight instruction

28 hours solo flight practice

10 hours ground briefing (estimated)

40 hours Ground School

Transport Canada written exam 

Transport Canada Flight Test


At TylAir Aviation Ltd. we strongly believe that the student should be aware of the actual flying hours involved in attaining a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) 


Realistic Training hours:

33 hours dual flight instruction

12 hours solo flight practice

12 hours ground briefing

50 hours Ground School 

Transport Canada written exam 

Transport Canada Flight Test


Note: Private Pilot Licence Program does not require approval by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training, BC. As such, the registrar of PTIB did not review this program.


 The actual training hours would vary based on individual progress or needs.

Our aircraft rates for local students is $180per hour and Instruction rates are $55per hour. These rates do not include taxes.
